Civic Engagement

In November, the Montgomery County Council will make a once-in-a-lifetime decision -- what to do with solid waste: keep the Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) open or send county waste to an out-of-state landfill.
The LWVMC Environment Committee has submitted a letter to the council urging them to keep the RRF open.The committee’s analysis revealed that continuing to operate the RRF would produce better environmental, public health, financial, and environmental justice outcomes than long-hauling waste to an out-of-state landfill. The LWVMC recommended the county continue to operate the RRF while aggressively pursuing cost-effective waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting. We encourage LWVMC members to review the League’s letter and review the alternatives. PLEASE share your views with the County Council on this important issue.
