How Often Do I Have To Register?

In Maryland, your voter registration is permanent as long as you keep your Maryland address current.

Keep Your Registration Up To Date

Maryland law requires voters to notify their respective elections office of changes to their name or address within 30 days. Voters can also change their party affiliation. Any of these changes can be made using the voter application methods outlined in the "How Do I Register" section above. The application form should be completely filled out using the new name, address or party affiliation, while checking the box for what information is new and filling in at the bottom what the previous name or address were, if applicable.

Why Is It Important To Keep My Address Up To Date?

Moving from one address to another even within Montgomery County may mean that you are in a different election district for congressional races (U.S. House of Representatives), legislative races (Maryland State Senators and Delegates), and County Council. See Election Maps. Keeping your address up to date with the Board of Elections means you will receive the correct ballot with candidates who represent your new residence.
Should I Register With A Party?

Party affiliation is your choice. Party affiliation is important in the Primary Election in Maryland because only registered Republicans can vote for Republican candidates and only registered Democrats can vote for Democratic candidates. Voters who are affiliated with other parties or have no party affiliation (Unaffiliated) can vote only for the nonpartisan Board of Education offices in the Primary Election. In the November General Election, all registered voters may vote for any candidate or ballot issue.

Confirmation of Voter Registration, Change of Name, Address, Party Affiliation
  • You can be certain you are registered to vote when you receive a Voter Notification Card from the Board of Elections but if you have not received or cannot find your card, you can verify your registration using Voter Lookup on the State Board of Elections website.
  • Any changes to your voter registration will be noted on a new Voter Notification Card. The voter notification card includes your name, address, party affiliation, polling place location, and respective election districts.
  • If you have not received a card within three (3) weeks after submitting a new voter registration application or updating your registration information, please call the office at (240) 777-8500.
